Senior Advisor
Stan Gatchel
Mr. Garchel has served as the Senior Advisor for SDPS for over 10 years. He previously served as Secretary and Treasurer of the Society.
Mr. Gatchel earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas Arlington in 1969. It proved a difficult course of study, with only 10% of the original freshmen class graduating.
Following graduation, he worked for Bell Helicopter Textron in Fort Worth for over five years as a dynamicist specializing in the system stability of tiltrotor aircraft designs, including complex computer analysis, software development, and wind tunnel testing.
He subsequently attended The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in State College, Pennsylvania, where he earned a Master of Science degree in Engineering Mechanics from the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics, an honors program within Penn State's Department of Engineering.
He then went to work for Structural Dynamics Research Corporation, an engineering consulting firm in Cincinnati, Ohio. For two years, he performed structural analysis on a wide array of diverse machine designs from heavy construction machinery to high speed rotary compressor units.
The next fifteen years were spent at University Computing Company (UCC) in Dallas, Texas. UCC offered a diverse group of engineering analysis software on their worldwide computer timesharing service, including finite element software, circuit design, piping systems design, CAD/CAM, simulation software, computer graphics, and much more. Mr. Gatchel was part of a support group helping customers use these offerings. He later became the manager of this group and went on to become Marketing Manager for the company. During this time he traveled the world meeting with customers to help with all kinds of engineering problems. He also developed the company's software quality assurance (SQA) program to allow UCC's software in the nuclear power industry.
Following UCC, he worked for a small consulting company in Dallas. For two years, he consulted with one of the largest electric utilities in Texas to develop a software quality assurance program, which passed a stringent government audit.
The next four years he worked as a consultant for a small company that Professor Murat Tanik and he formed, named Process Sciences Laboratory (PSL). As a consultant, Mr. Gatchel worked for a start-up telecom company where he assisted in process improvement, procedure development, and the implementation of a myriad of software applications and databases needed to provision new telecom customers.
Mr. Gatchel next formed a new telecom marketing company called 14UCC, Inc. As agents for various provider firms, 14UCC marketed their specialized telecom services directly to new customers. This company provided the extra time for Mr. Gatchel to devote a great deal of effort to SDPS, which was very useful, following the significant changes in leadership in 2008. This company was dissolved in 2024, following Mr. Gatchel's retirement.
Of note, Mr Gatchel joined a special transdisciplinary PhD program at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas in 2006. He spent two years completing all required coursework, but quit in 2008 without completing his dissertation, due to the demands of SDPS.
In 2002, he had loosely started writing a special paper on his own. While gathering thoughts through the years, he continued to work as time permitted. In 2012, the writing began in earnest until it was at last completed in late 2024---23 years of working in what spare time he had available. This unpublished document may be considered his final work.
Director of IT
Mohan Qiao

Following his undergraduate studies, he entered the Master’s program in Quality Systems Engineering at Concordia University, from which he accelerated directly into the Ph.D. program in Information & Systems Engineering, where he is currently a doctoral student. Mr. Qiao began his research career focusing on innovative approaches to Cyber-Physical Security in IoT infrastructures, where he compiled comprehensive datasets to support machine learning applications. He subsequently collaborated on advanced research involving UAVs and remote sensing technologies for environmental monitoring and forest fire detection. Mr. Qiao also served as a co-lead researcher for the PISA Canada English research group for the OECD PISA 2025 Creative Thinking Assessment Project, where he designed the PRISM cross-platform assessment system to support standardized evaluation. Currently, his work integrates topology and psychology into the fields of spatial statistics and data science. Additionally, he is engaged in the development of ontological knowledge abstraction for aviation systems.
